Dingoes are a natural and protected part of life on the Island, and whilst they are often seen around Orchid Beach, they generally keep to themselves. As with anywhere on K’gari, guests just need to follow the basic safety guidelines: never feed dingoes, keep food secured, supervise children, avoid walking alone at dawn or dusk, and if you are going for a walk, carry a stick as a deterrent. There is an exclusion zone around Dingoes... basically, ensure you're not deliberately interacting or attempting to get within a close proximity to them, and if they come near you, you are to shoo them away and not allow them to get too comfortable or close to you.
Island Time is located within a fully fenced township, which helps provide an extra level of safety and peace of mind during your stay. As long as visitors respect the wildlife and follow the island guidelines, dingoes are simply a fascinating part of the K’gari experience.
There is a dump located South of the Orchid Beach township, (West of the inland track that leads you from Champagne pools to Orchid Beach.) You need to take all your own rubbish to the tip when the bins are full, as there is no wheelie bin service on the Island. You are asked to ensure you remove all rubbish from the property upon vacating, otherwise extra cleaning fees will be taken out of your bond.
Yes. K’gari is a sand island and all access roads and beaches require a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. Before travelling to the island, make sure your vehicle is suitable for sand driving and remember to lower your tyre pressures once you arrive.
Driving conditions change with tides and weather, so it’s always a good idea to check tide times and track conditions before heading out.
We have a key lock box. It is a contactless check-in, and you will be given the code (via text) a day or 2 before check-in.
Upon check-out, ensure you've adhered to the check-out checklist and pop the keys back into the lockbox for the next tenants. Lost keys will incur a fee, so please ensure you keep them in a safe place during your stay.
Access to K’gari is via vehicle barge from either Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach.
From there you’ll travel along the Eastern beach before heading North to Orchid Beach. The drive is part of the adventure and offers some incredible scenery along the way.
We’re happy to provide directions and tips for guests who are visiting the island for the first time.
Phone reception at Orchid Beach can vary depending on your provider. Telstra is generally the go-to provider on the Island. Some areas around the house and township have reception, while other parts of the island may not. It can also become quite patchy during peak seasons.
Because you’re on K’gari, it’s best to download maps and important information before arriving on the island, as much of the Island is out of range.
Due to the lack of a laundromat on the Island, we are only able to provide our guests with mattress protectors, pillows, comforters, coverlets, spare mink blankets, floor mats and tea towels.
We ask that you please BYO fitted and top sheets, as well as beach and bath towels. This is predominantly for hygiene reasons, as we're unable to wash linen at the high temperatures offered by laundromats on the mainland.
Orchid Beach has a small shop that sells basic supplies, takeaway food and fuel. However, selection can be limited, so we recommend bringing most of your groceries and supplies with you when you travel to the island.
Island Time is a fully off-grid house, which is part of what makes staying on K’gari such a special experience. The house runs on solar power with battery storage and generator backup, and uses rainwater and bore water along with a septic plumbing system. Because of this, we ask guests to be mindful of power and water use during their stay.
Our generator has an automatic, timed run every Saturday around midday, and our bore pump has an automatic, timed run every day around midday. During this time, the sprinklers will run, and it will also refill the water tank which supplies the house. Please ensure sprinklers are not switched off, as it can damage fittings or the bore pump, which is a very expensive, time consuming fix.
Please remember that our septic system is very sensitive to things like sanitary items such as baby wipes, tampons, and things like oil, etc. Do not, under any circumstance, flush these items down the toilet or sink unless you want the septic system to back up on you. Trust me, it's not a pretty sight or fragrance, and it's DEFINITELY a trip-ruiner.
